Desde los últimos años del siglo XX se observó un crecimientomuy importante de la
migración internacional debidoal fortalecimientode laseconomías integradas, el incre-
mentoenel usode las tecnologíasaplicadas, losdesigualescrecimientosdemográficos,
lasmodificacionesen lascondiciones laboralesy la liberalizaciónde losflujosdebienes,
capitalesyservicios, entreotros. Estoscambiosnospermitenhablarhoynosolodeuna
mundializaciónde lamigración, sinoademásdeunaglobalización.
Conel objetivode tener unmarco referencial quenospermitaentender estosnuevos
procesosmigratorios globales, en este capítulo sepresentandiversos datos referen-
tes al volumen, tendencias y dirección de la migración entre regiones y países; así
como losprincipales corredoresmigratorios. Además, se resaltanalgunas caracterís-
ticas sociodemográficas de losmigrantes.
Sincethe lastyearsof thetwentiethcentury, internationalmigrationshowsasignificant
growthprocessdue to thestrengtheningof integratedeconomies, the increaseduseof
applied technologies, theunevendemographicgrowth, the changes in labor conditions,
the increasing liberalization of the flows of goods, capital and services, among others.
Today, thesechangesallowustotalknotonlyaboutthespreadofmigrationthroughout
theworld, but alsoglobalization.
Inorder tohave a framework that allows us tounderstand these newglobalmigration
processes,thischapter includesdataaboutthevolume,directionandtrendsofmigration
among regions and countries as well as the main migratory corridors. In addition, it
highlights some sociodemographic characteristicsof themigrant population.
