Australians want less migration but oppose cutting international student
numbers, study finds
|
The survey by Australian National University researchers found that many
Australians hold
inaccurate – and sometimes contradictory – ideas about migrants and levels of migration.
While a majority think
migration is too high, many people change their minds when given new information, the
researchers found. |

According to the International
Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Missing Migrants Project, at least 82 people,
including 14 children, died trying
to cross the Channel in 2024. |

Libya finds two mass graves with bodies of nearly 50 migrants, refugees
|
Rights groups and UN agencies have documented systematic abuse against
migrants, refugees in Libya
including torture, rape and extortion. Mass graves containing the bodies of asylum
seekers have previously been
discovered in Libya, the main transit point for migrants from Africa and the Middle East
trying to make it to
Europe.
Human traffickers have benefited from more than a decade of instability, smuggling
migrants and refugees across the
country’s borders with six nations, including Chad, Niger, Sudan, Egypt, Algeria and
Tunisia. |

Brussels scrambles to defend Migration Pact after Donald Tusk's refusal
to comply |
"Poland will not implement the Migration Pact in a way that would
introduce additional quotas of
immigrants in Poland. This is not an ideological debate. Poland is in a very particular
situation. We're under huge
pressure from illegal migration," Tusk said in a joint press conference. Its central
pillar is a novel mechanism of
"mandatory solidarity" that will give governments three different options: relocate a
certain number of asylum
seekers, pay a financial contribution or provide operational support, like personnel and
equipment. The relocations
need to reach 30,000 per year and the financial contributions, €600 million. |

Europe: European Court of Human Rights to hear landmark ‘pushback’ cases
|
The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights will hear three
cases against Latvia,
Lithuania and Poland concerning alleged unlawful pushbacks — summary returns of migrants
and refugees at the border
— from these EU states to Belarus. This is the first time the European Court will rule
on human rights implications
of what the EU and its member states are calling ‘instrumentalized’ migration. |

With doors closed to the US, asylum-seekers turn to their Plan B: A new
life in Mexico |

recent years under the Biden
administration, Delgado is among a growing number of migrants from across the world to
ditch — or at least pause —
their ambitions of reaching the U.S., and focus instead on building a life in Mexico.

Trump Administration Toughens Rules for Release of Migrant Children
|
The Trump administration on Friday toughened the security requirements
for sponsors of migrant children, a move that
could make it more difficult for minors who cross the border alone to be released from
federal custody and united
with family members in the United States.
The policy is similar to one imposed during the first Trump administration, which sought
to tighten the vetting
process for those living with migrant children. |

How Germany's leadership change could shape EU immigration |
Permanent controls at the Schengen borders. The denial of entry to
people seeking asylum at the
German border if they have already traveled through another EU country. Detention of
those who have been told they
have to leave the country. These are just some of the measures that Friedrich Merz, the
Christian Democrats' (CDU)
candidate for chancellor, wants to see implemented. He currently leads the polls and has
the best chance of forming
the next German government. |

Migrants in limbo in Panama jungle camp after being deported from U.S.
|
Analysts say arrangements such as the Panama one are part of the Trump
administration’s effort to
“outsource” its deportation plans to countries in Central America. Costa Rica has also
received migrants from
various nationalities that were deported from the U.S. in recent weeks. |
